Oilers, Kings, Canadiens & Strange News

This edition (June 8, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three stories that cap off a really surprising day for hockey writers. The Oilers are stirring controversy by seriously sniffing around Mike Babcock. The Kings went the opposite route and grabbed veteran bench boss Peter Laviolette to push for now. And the Canadiens’ rebuild suddenly looks less raw and more “could be ahead of schedule.”

Coaching drama, win-now hires, and surprise progress are all happening at once. Here are recaps of the stories:

NHL Trade Talk Recap June 8

Oilers Seriously Eyeing Mike Babcock? Apparently So.

Word leaked that Edmonton is poking at the idea of bringing Mike Babcock back, with ownership and players apparently in talks. This seems so out of left field, given Babcock’s history of shady behaviour and past firings. People remember the phone-snooping in Columbus and the whole Marner ranking mess. Hiring him would feel like a major facepalm.

If true, this screams desperation. Edmonton’s blown through options chasing big names and now might settle for a controversial vet because he’s a “hard” coach. Maybe the players want someone who pushes. Still, optics, culture, and the franchise’s recent decision-making suggest this would be an ugly, risky move. Is it one that fans would not forgive easily?

Kings Hire Peter Laviolette in a Win-Now Move

Peter Laviolette is the new Los Angeles Kings coach on a three-year deal. He turned down interest from Edmonton and Toronto to take the Kings’ job. Give him credit, he’s got a solid resume: 800+ wins, a 2006 Cup, and a track record of getting teams playing hard, structured hockey fast.

This is Ken Holland’s way of saying “we’re done treading water.” Laviolette’s style fits a veteran-heavy roster that still needs its young pieces to grow, and he’s the kind of coach who can force accountability and push for a real playoff run. If he can balance veterans and youth, the Kings could be scary next season.

Are the Canadiens Actually Ahead of Schedule?

Montreal’s rebuild suddenly looks less like a work-in-progress and more like a real team. They’re neither dominant nor finished. But they are competitive in stretches where they used to get steamrolled. That kind of consistency shows the rebuild might’ve hit an earlier gear than anyone expected.

This is the dangerous sweet spot. There’s enough progress to raise expectations, but still plenty of holes to expose if you push too fast. The real test isn’t getting here; it’s staying here. If they keep building without rushing, this could be a legit rise. Mess it up and the NHL will remind you how quickly things can fall apart.
