Maple Leafs, Canucks & Oilers’ Surprise

This edition (June 9, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three stories that could be considered head-scratchers. Would the Maple Leafs flip Knies for defence help and totally reshuffle their prospect map? Are the Canucks looking close to snagging Brendan Gallagher for some grit? And the Oilers zipped onto Mike Babcock, apparently preferring chemistry and a cheaper short-term roll of the dice over waiting on Bruce Cassidy.

NHL Trade Talk Recap June 9

Maple Leafs Swap Knies for Defensive Help? Bold, Risky, Maybe Smart

Cliff Parker, an administrator from the Toronto Maple Leafs Central Facebook group, tossed out an interesting trade idea. Send Matt Knies, Jacob Quillan and a 2nd pick to Chicago for the No.4 pick, Oliver Moore and Kevin Korchinski — then grab a top defensive prospect like Chase Ried. That’s basically turning a solid young forward into immediate, high-upside blue-line talent, and yeah, it’d change Toronto’s pipeline overnight.

Trading Knies would sting. He’s young, physical, and still rising. But the Maple Leafs have choked for years due to a lack of defensive depth. Korchinski, plus a high-end prospect, plugs a glaring hole and could speed a true contender timeline; the downside is obvious if Knies explodes elsewhere. It’s a swing-for-the-fences move: messy now, possibly brilliant later.

The Trade Idea That Forces a Maple Leafs Double Take

Canucks Eye Brendan Gallagher — Could Be a Perfect Fit

Word is Vancouver’s actually kicking the tires on Brendan Gallagher. His agent confirms talks are happening but says nothing’s done yet. Gallagher made it clear he’s ready to move on from Montreal. And with one year left on a $6.5M deal, any trade will need some cap gymnastics or retention to make sense.

Gallagher’s the kind of gritty, no-nonsense leader the Canucks could use while they rebuild. He brings energy, edge, and is a guy who sets the tone in the room. If Vancouver can sort the money side, he’d plug right into their culture push and give their young core a veteran who actually walks the walk.

Why the Oilers Suddenly Have Their Eye on Mike Babcock

They were ready to wait on Bruce Cassidy, but somehow the Oilers pivoted fast. Now Babcock’s the guy pending NHLPA/league sign-off. Players and ownership apparently liked him in meetings, and that dressing-room buy-in can beat waiting for Vegas to decide on an interview.

Money and timing probably mattered too: Babcock is likely a cheaper, shorter-term option that avoids a massive long-term payout, and Edmonton didn’t want offseason plans frozen while they waited on Vegas. So they moved on, and whatever talks they’d already had made pulling the trigger feel right.
