Dan Evans issues statement announcing his retirement from tennis at Wimbledon

Dan Evans is set to bring the curtain down on his 20-year career.

Evans, a Davis Cup champion, has announced that he will retire from his playing career at Wimbledon.

The British star, who reached a career-high ranking of world number 21, last played a competitive match in French Open qualifying.

Evans released a heartfelt statement on his social media channels, reflecting on his career.

“After an incredible journey, I wanted to share some personal news with you all,” the former top-20 player said in an Instagram post.

“I will be retiring from professional tennis following this year’s Wimbledon championships.

“This sport has given me everything,” the British star continued. “The friendships, the experiences, the battles and even the hard days were special in hindsight.

“I have loved every single minute of being a professional tennis player.

“To my parents, my wife and my family, thank you for your unwavering support through every high and low. None of this would have been possible without your support.

“To every coach, trainer, physio, sponsor and member of my team over the years, the list is too long to name individually, but each of you played a part in shaping my career and I am truly grateful.

“Representing Great Britain in both Davis Cup and the Olympics remains the greatest honour of my career and something I will cherish for the rest of my life.

“I’m looking forward to finishing on a high across these final two tournaments and giving everything I have one last time.

Dan Evans’ ATP debut

Evans made his professional debut at the 2008 Queen’s Club Championships.

The Briton, who was given a main-draw wildcard, was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Xavier Malisse in the first round.

Around 13 years later, Evans won his first ATP Tour event.

Evans, 30, beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-2, 6-3 to win the 2021 Murray River Open.

“Of course I wanted to win a title, but today was just another match – I approached it in that way,” said Evans after clinching the title.

“Everybody wants to win. It’s a great feeling to win. But like I said last year, this year I wanted to do well in the bigger events.”

Evans went on to secure the biggest title of his career two years later after beating Tallon Griekspoor in the Washington Open final.
