Chris Jericho has heard the criticism, but he is not wasting his time trying to win over people who already decided they dislike him.
While speaking to Dan Marston, Jericho explained that he learned early in his career not to let critics control his choices. He said his life and career are his own, and he refuses to live based on what others think he should do.
“I realized you can’t listen to people that tell you you can’t do something. And why the hell do you care what I’m doing anyways? This is my life. This is my decision. This is what I’m going to do.”
Jericho said he still wants people to enjoy his work, but he also understands that not everyone will. He tries to make fans like what he does, but if some people refuse to enjoy it, he knows there is nothing he can do to change that.
“And so very early on, to this day I still have that. I don’t care what people think of what I’m doing. I want them to like it, but if they don’t, that’s nothing I can do about. I try my best to make people like the things that I’m doing. The majority of them do, but some people will hate everything that you do. And that’s fine.”
The AEW star added that worrying about haters is pointless because many of them will never admit they were wrong. Instead, Jericho said his focus stays on the fans who already support him and on winning over new ones.
“You can’t worry about the people that hate what you do because they’re never going to like you ever. Because that’s admitting to themselves that they were wrong. You can appeal to the people that do like you and then making new fans. And that’s what I’m always focused on.”
Jericho’s comments make it clear that he is not interested in chasing approval from everyone. After decades in wrestling, he knows criticism comes with the territory, and he would rather focus on creating for the people who actually want to see what he does next.
