ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 is set to take centre stage as England take on Sri Lanka in the tournament opener at Edgbaston on June 12. The host nation will be eager to begin on a winning note as they look to make full use of home conditions and passionate local support.

England have never lost a Women’s Cricket World Cup on home soil, irrespective of format, whether ODI or T20I. While playing at home gives them an advantage, the pressure of maintaining that legacy could be a significant challenge for Nat Sciver-Brunt and her team under the guidance of head coach Charlotte Edwards. Interestingly, when the tournament was first held in England in 2009, it was Edwards who led the country to glory. Now, as head coach, she has another opportunity to play a key role in a potential home World Cup triumph.

The home side head into the tournament with a strong and versatile squad, with their bowling attack potentially their biggest X-factor. They also arrive in good form, having defeated both defending T20 world champions New Zealand and India in recent home T20I series. Although they lost one of their two warm-up matches, Sciver-Brunt’s side appear well placed to begin their campaign strongly.

For Sri Lanka, it is a challenging fixture with which to begin their campaign. Facing England in England is never easy, particularly given the hosts’ quality and recent form. However, their inspirational captain Chamari Athapaththu, who is set to play her 10th T20 World Cup, will lead an exciting young side hoping to produce performances that can inspire the next generation.

The positive for Sri Lanka is that they too arrive with momentum. They defeated Bangladesh in a three-match away T20I series before registering two convincing warm-up victories, showing that England cannot afford to take them lightly.

Performance in T20 World Cup 2024

England: Failed to progress beyond the group stage despite winning three of their four matches. Their only defeat came against West Indies and, due to an inferior net run rate, England missed out as West Indies and South Africa progressed to the semi-finals.

Sri Lanka: It was a forgettable campaign and their worst-ever T20 World Cup performance. They lost all four group-stage matches and, for the first time, failed to register a single win in a T20 World Cup edition. This tournament presents an opportunity for Athapaththu’s side to redeem themselves with improved performances.
