Starting Pitchers

Chase Burns

If there’s a part of the game in which Chase Burns has struggled this season, it’s  with left-handed batters. Seven of the nine home runs he’s allowed have been to lefty hitters, and lefties are just getting on base at a clip of .306 against him. He’s also allowed one home run in each of his last three starts. Of course, he’s also struck out 27 of the 66 batters he faced in those three starts.

Lucas Giolito

The Padres signed Lucas Giolito to a one-year deal with an option for 2027 on April 22, 2026. San Diego has had major injuries to their starting rotation early in the season, and Giolito, coming off Tommy John surgery in 2024 and another minor elbow issue in 2025, was available for them to sign at that time. Giolito had been a free agent and went unsigned in the offseason. He made his season debut on May 17 against Seattle, pitching five innings and earning the win while allowing three runs on one hit with three walks and three strikeouts. He had another stellar start against the Athletics in his second start of the season, but in his most recent two starts, he’s allowed eleven hits and six earned runs in 6.2 innings.

The Reds have only faced Giolito three times, but they’ve hit him well when they have faced him. In 14.1 innings, the Reds have the highest team OPS against Giolito at 1.109.  Eugenio Suárez and Matt McLain have both homered off him in limited at-bats. Spencer Steer has two hits against him (likely why Steer got the day off yesterday instead of today), and Nathaniel Lowe has the most-at-bats against him with five hits in 19 at-bats, including two doubles.
