Newcastle open talks to sign James Trafford from Man City

Newcastle United have rekindled their interest in signing Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford this summer, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, with the clubs in contact despite no formal talks having taken place and the move complicated by Trafford’s desire to delay a decision until after the World Cup.

Ornstein reported that while Newcastle’s desire is firm and contact has been established between the clubs, Trafford himself is not ready to make a decision on his future before the conclusion of the tournament, which could prove too late for Newcastle given their preference to resolve the goalkeeping situation earlier in the window. The Magpies have already made one goalkeeping signing this summer, with 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen arriving from Reims to provide competition in the department, following Aaron Ramsdale’s return to Southampton at the end of his loan spell.

James Trafford Newcastle interest and what it means for Nick Pope

Trafford, who has been described as world-class by Scott Parker, would arrive at St James’ Park looking to establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper, a role he has been unable to secure at Manchester City. With Jaouen likely to operate as the number two, the logical conclusion of adding a third goalkeeper to the group is that Nick Pope would need to leave the club.

Pope has struggled with consistency over the last few years and has made costly errors at key moments during his time at Newcastle. Having already brought in Jaouen and now pursuing Trafford, it would make very little sense for the club to retain three senior goalkeepers heading into the new season. A sale of Pope would free up wages and a squad place while allowing Trafford to step in as the undisputed number one under Eddie Howe.

The complication in the James Trafford transfer timeline

The issue for Newcastle is entirely one of timing. Trafford wants to focus on the World Cup before turning his attention to club matters, which is understandable but potentially problematic for a club that wants to plan their goalkeeping setup well in advance of pre-season. If the window moves quickly and other clubs make competing approaches for Trafford while Newcastle wait, the situation could become more complex than it currently appears.

For now, the desire from the Tyneside club is clear and the lines of communication are open. Whether the timeline aligns with what Trafford himself wants from this summer remains the central question that will determine whether this move happens.
