Harold Fannin Jr. mysteriously sits out offseason practices

The Cleveland Browns completed their offseason program without one of the most important pieces of their passing attack taking part in on-field work. Tight end Harold Fannin Jr. did not participate in organized team activities or mandatory minicamp, despite being present during the team’s Phase 1 sessions in April.

Fannin emerged as Cleveland’s go-to receiving option last season. In 16 games, including 13 starts, he recorded 72 receptions for 731 yards and six receiving touchdowns. He also added a rushing touchdown. No other Browns pass-catcher reached 50 receptions, making Fannin the most productive target on a team that languished offensively throughout the year.

Thr reason for Fannin’s absence remains unknown. NFL teams are not required to disclose injury information during the offseason, with mandatory reporting not beginning until the week leading into the regular season. Contract-related issues can also be ruled out, as Fannin is not eligible for a new deal until after the 2027 season.

The situation has led to speculations because Fannin was seen participating during April workouts before sitting out the remainder of the spring program. Last season, he dealt with a groin injury that ended his year one week early, though no connection between that injury and his current absence has been confirmed.

While absent from practice, Fannin has remained engaged with the team’s preparation. Browns tight ends coach Jeff Blasko said the young tight end has continued studying the playbook and has shown progress in learning the offense. His absence, however, has prevented him from gaining valuable on-field repetitions in the new system being implemented by head coach Todd Monken.

For now, the reason behind Fannin’s offseason inactivity remains unresolved.
