Barcelona victory gives Ferrari confidence, not illusions

Lewis Hamilton’s victory in Barcelona was not merely a personal triumph. It was evidence that Ferrari has finally rediscovered pace, identity and control. The result in Spain should not be viewed as an isolated success, but rather as the first concrete sign of a team that has endured difficult moments, remained united and is now beginning to return to the front of the Formula 1 grid.

Perhaps even more importantly, Barcelona has long been regarded as Formula 1’s ultimate proving ground. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is often described as the sport’s university because of its ability to expose both the strengths and weaknesses of every car. If a team performs strongly there, the expectation is that it should be competitive almost everywhere. Fred Vasseur’s post-race comments only reinforced that impression, reflecting the clarity and calmness that often accompany a project that is finally beginning to function as intended.

The only disappointment from Ferrari’s weekend was Charles Leclerc’s retirement, caused by a brake-by-wire issue just a few laps from the finish. Yet even that setback did little to alter the broader direction the team appears to be heading.

“The pace was there”: victory as confirmation of Ferrari’s hard work

When Fred Vasseur faced the media after the race, the adrenaline was still evident. “I’m still a little under the effect of the race, but it’s a very good feeling because we’ve been through difficult moments,” he said, acknowledging the challenges Ferrari has had to overcome to reach this point.

This victory was not created in a single weekend. It was built over months of hard work, setbacks and persistence. “The comeback is even more important and it has been a very strong and positive feeling for us. And when I say ‘us’, I mean the team and Lewis,” the French manager explained.

According to the Ferrari team principal, Lewis Hamilton had the speed from the very beginning of the weekend. “He was capable of fighting for pole position and during the race he was in control of the situation. When we asked him to push, he was exceptional.” Ferrari did not win through luck or circumstance alone. It won because it demonstrated genuine race-winning pace, something Vasseur emphasized with a measured confidence that arguably carried more weight than any emotional celebration.

“We weren’t gone two weeks ago and we’re not world champions today”

One of Fred Vasseur’s most striking comments perfectly summed up Ferrari’s current mindset. “I’m trying to calm both the negative comments and the overly enthusiastic ones. It’s not as if we had disappeared two weeks ago and now we are world champions.”

That statement encapsulates the maturity Ferrari is trying to build. The team is neither becoming carried away by success nor overwhelmed by setbacks. Instead, it is focusing on the long-term process. “Lewis is emotional, the team is emotional, and my job is to calm everyone down. But I know for sure that this weekend is a huge boost in terms of confidence.”

The upgrades are working, the car is responding positively and strategy has once again become a genuine weapon for Ferrari. “When you have the pace, you can do two, three or four stops. If you have the pace, you win the race. Today the pace was there and Lewis managed everything fantastically.”

Fred Vasseur also responded to suggestions that Ferrari should simply aim to be ‘best of the rest’. “I have never said that I want to be the best of the rest. We are here to fight.” Then came a remark that may best define Ferrari’s philosophy in 2026: “Three weeks ago I should have fired half the group. Today I should build statues of them. We need to stay calm.”

A starting point, not a finishing line

Barcelona should not be viewed as a destination. It is a new beginning. Ferrari not only won, but did so with a level of conviction and consistency that has often been missing in recent seasons. Lewis Hamilton drove with authority, the team executed with precision and the latest upgrades delivered exactly what was expected.

This Ferrari does not look like a team enjoying a brief moment of success. Instead, it resembles a project that has finally found its voice. When Formula 1 returns in Austria, Ferrari will start again from this foundation: the knowledge that the road ahead remains long, but also the belief that it is finally heading in the right direction.

For the first time in a long while, the Scuderia appears capable of being a genuine protagonist in the championship battle rather than merely watching it unfold from the sidelines.
