United Racing Series visits Peterborough Speedway for doubleheader

PETERBOROUGH, ON – Ideal late spring conditions greeted a Central Ontario crowd – Saturday, June 13th – as the United Racing Series brought the APC Late Model and Dayco Super Stock tours to Peterborough Speedway.

The first order of the business was a 50-lap headliner for the Dayco Super Stocks, with Chad Corcoran and home track regular Coltin Everingham on the front row as the 15 starters came to the Great Canadian RV green flag. Corcoran was the early race leader, as Shawn Chenoweth moved into the runner-up position. With almost a 5th of the race distance complete, Chenoweth moved his No. 89c ride into a lead he’d never relinquish.

Slower traffic became with 15 laps on the scoreboard and at the halfway mark, the top 5 in the running order were Chenoweth, Lane Zardo, Everingham, Nic Ramsay and Hudson Nagy. Once he was in front of the field, there was no looking back for Chenoweth who claimed the win in the caution-free headliner. Zardo, Everingham, Ramsay and Nagy chased Chenoweth across the line. Following the race, Shawn Chenoweth presented the checkered flag to a young fan in the grandstands.

A handful of familiar names made the starting line-up for the Super Stock feature tilt. Marlie Owen finished 11th, Paul Boundy 12th, Andrew Massey 13th, Donovan Price 14th and Brad Lavalle was 15th at the checkered flag.

With 20 laps to settle the score, the Ontario Bandolero Series was next with Josh Davenport and Lucas Finnegan on the front row. Davenport took the early race lead and showed his strength with a straightaway advantage on 2nd place Finnegan with just over a handful of laps on the scoreboard. The race pace was slowed due to a yellow flag for a single car spin in the 3rd turn with 7 laps complete. Davenport maintained his lead on the restart, with Finnegan 2nd, while Ava Boundy and Landon Sellers fought over the 3rd position. Lapped traffic became an issue with 11 laps on the board but couldn’t keep Josh Davenport from victory lane. Finnegan, Sellers, Keegan Moat and Ava Boundy completed the top 5.

Cameron McGlasham and Christen Lavalle brought the SwitchTire Mini Stock starting field to the track for a 20-lap headliner. Christen Lavalle took the early lead, with his brother John alongside at the drop of the green flag. John Lavalle took the race lead, with Wyatt Sutcliffe moving into 2nd before a yellow flag for a 3rd turn issue slowed the pace with 7 laps complete. Lavalle and Sutcliffe waged a torrid battle for the race lead on the restart, before another yellow slowed the pace with 10 laps complete. After running side-by-side for several laps, Sutcliffe was able to take the lead from John Lavalle with the scoreboard showing 14 laps. A frontstretch issue brought out another yellow flag, with just 6 laps remaining. Wyatt Sutcliffe held off a challenge from his brother Jacob to take the win. Christen Lavalle, Coleridge Phinnemore and John Lavalle completed the top 5.

The No. 10k of Kent Missons was disqualified after a ride height violation during Mini Stock qualifying.

The No. 27 can of Jacob Sutcliffe was disqualified for a left-side weight violation. A revised finishing order shows a top 5 of Wyatt Sutcliffe, Christen Lavalle, Coleridge Phinnemore, John Lavalle and Tegan Stanley.

Mark Griffin and Keaton Pipe were on the front row for the Trailers Plus Ontario Legend Car feature, with 25 laps or 25 minutes to decide the winner from a 17-car starting field. Griffin was the early race leader but he’d surrender the spot he’d taken from the drop of the green flag to Pipe with less than a handful of laps on the scoreboard.

The young lion led the way with Caleb Drimmie, Adam Cuthbertson, Parker Traves and reigning series champion Dawson Drimmie rounding out the fast 5 as teams started to work through slower traffic with 9 laps complete. Cuthbertson – a former 2-time series champion – moved into the runner-up position and had his sights set on the back bumper of the race leader when the first caution flag waved for an issue on the backstretch with 13 laps on the scoreboard. Traves wrestled away the lead with 16 laps complete and the driver of the No. 08 machine held on for the win. A storm front moved in and rain ended the main event with 20 of the scheduled 25 laps on the scoreboard. Pipe, Cuthbertson, Drimmie and Gibson Baker completed the top 5.

The 175 lap United Racing Series APC Late Model main event wrapped up the night’s action, as Mike Bentley and Connor Pritiko brought the starting field to the line. Bentley grabbed the race lead, with Pritiko, Kyle Steckly, Jake Sheridan and Josh Stade holding the top 5 spots in the early stages. Steckly and Sheridan were marching toward the front, with the No. 22 machine taking the lead with 19 laps complete and Sheridan took 2nd a lap later. The leaders started to work through slower traffic near 35 laps into the run and held the position to the first yellow flag with 52 laps complete.

At the halfway point, the top 5 was Steckly, Sheridan, Stade, Brandon Watson and Dale Shaw. A lap 90 yellow flag turned into a red, after a gear oil leak necessitated a lengthy clean-up. Steckly was still in control past the 100-lap mark when Jake Sheridan mounted his charge. He took the race lead at lap 114 and survived a pair of late race yellow flags to take his 3rd straight extra distance race win at Peterborough Speedway. Brandon Watson, Connor Pritiko, Josh Stade and Kyle Steckly completed the top 5.
