Baker Mayfield Shares Why He Agreed To Do Netflix’s “Quarterback”

For those that may not know, Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield will be starring in this season’s Netflix series called “Quarterback.” It has been a wildly popular show on the network that goes behind the scenes of various players in the NFL, documenting their life behind the scenes, preparation for games and the aftermath of said contests. Season three, which features Mayfield, Tennessee’s Cam Ward, Washington’s Jayden Daniels and Joe Flacco, who was with the Browns last year, debuts on Netflix on July 14.

Mayfield had previously been asked to join the series before but turned it down during his second season in Tampa Bay. However, the Bucs’ star eventually came around to the idea and agreed to do it for the 2025 season. It was announced in May that he’ll be on the show, so everything has already been filmed and documented from the 2025 season.

Why was Mayfield open to it now? He explained when he met with the local media following the first day of Bucs mini-camp.

“I think turning it down the first few times, for me, it seems like it’s a ‘me, me, me’ thing,” Baker Mayfield said. “I wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to be like that. Talking to guys that have done it in the past, continuous conversations with Peyton Manning, it’s really not that invasive.

“Somebody’s going to be mic’d up on a game day anyway, and once a week during practice. Just for me, a couple of sit-down interviews outside the building. Gotten some family footage. I wanted to get a lot of that stuff captured just from of the phase of life that we’re going through, the next chapter and journey for us. But also – I think I do it to myself – but people have an idea about who I am, until you really get to know me, which is fine. So I hope that gives insight to the fact that I truly love this game, I love my teammates and I bust my ass off. ”

Mayfield mentioned the public misconception over who he is and how his persona has been portrayed in the past. It feels as if some still believe that he is the same player he was at Oklahoma and early in his career with Cleveland. But Mayfield is a different person now at age 31. He’s a father of two and someone that’s experienced a lot more in this league, getting to the point where he understands the do’s and don’ts of this league.

Mayfield tapped into the good parts of his game and who he is as a person while shedding the areas that would make one root against him. Mayfield still has a rock star persona to many. His flair for competition and willingness to win have made for some viral moments on social media here and there. Look no further than his fantastic game on the road when the Bucs defeated the Seahawks when Mayfield’s stellar performance that put him in the MVP conversation that was aided some trash talk with a fan who was chastising him before the game.

Baker Mayfield Doesn’t Want To Be A Distraction

Baker Mayfield has become well known too because of his various commercials that filmed when he entered the league. Some look at this as a distraction while others can rationalize that these commercials are shot in the offseason where he isn’t missing practice or preparing for a game.

What Mayfield really wanted to make sure of  – whether it’s his upcoming contract negotiations or filming a show like this for Netflix – is that he never wants to put the team in harm’s way. He never wants to be a distraction for the Bucs and his teammates have raved about how great of teammate Mayfield is and what kind of leader he has been become in Tampa Bay. So once he was assured that this won’t be an issue for anyone else – and the Bucs were fine with it – Mayfield gave Netflix the green light for fans to enjoy this summer.

“Anytime you feel comfortable enough, it’s been open and honest communication from the get go since I’ve been here,” Mayfield said. “Anytime you feel like that, and they know all I want to do is win, as long as that wasn’t going to be a distraction, as long as it wasn’t going to takeaway from the goals at the end, it was going to be okay and they (Netflix) made sure of that.”
