Wild cards for the upcoming Wimbledon Championships were announced on Tuesday. Headlining the recipients in men’s singles are Grigor Dimitrov and Stan Wawrinka.
Dimitrov led Jannik Sinner two sets to love in the fourth round of last year’s tournament before being forced to retire with a pectoral injury. Sinner went on to win the title. Dimitrov has been unable to get back on track up to this point in his comeback. The 35-year-old Bulgarian is ranked No. 169 in the world, leaving him well outside the cut line for Wimbledon direct entry.
Wawrinka is retiring at the end of this season, so he is making his final trip to the All-England Club. The 41-year-old Swiss comes in at 111th in the rankings. He reached back-to-back Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2014 and 2015, losing to Roger Federer and Richard Gasquet — the latter 11-9 in the fifth set.
The remaining wild cards are British, all with college ties: Jake Fearnley (TCU), Arthur Fery (Stanford), Jack Pinnington Jones (TCU), and Toby Samuel (South Carolina). Two WC spots are still available. Among the men’s doubles wild-card entries are Alexander Bublik and Nick Kyrgios.
On the women’s side, Serena Williams and Venus Williams are making their return to Wimbledon as six-time doubles champions. French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska is among the singles wild-card recipients.
