Oscar Collazo to face new opponent for June 20 world title defence

Neider Valdez (15-3-3, 12 KOs) has stepped up to challenge Oscar Collazo (14-0, 11 KOs) for the WBA and WBO minimumweight world titles.

Joey Canoy (25-5-2, 15 KOs, 1 NC) was originally set to face the Puerto Rican on June 20. According to a Wednesday press release, however, visa-related issues forced the Filipino to withdraw. A new opponent was sought and Valdez stepped in as a result.

Collazo-Valdez will headline a Golden Boy Promotions card – done in association with Miguel Cotto Promotions – at the Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, CA. Fight fans around the world will be able to catch the action live on DAZN.

Oscar Collazo and Neider Valdez speak on upcoming clash

“My job is to stay ready for whoever my team puts in the ring,” said Collazo in a press release. “While the Canoy fight didn’t happen, my focus has shifted entirely to Neider Valdez this Saturday. Trust me, we’re about to add another unforgettable chapter to the historic Puerto Rico vs. México rivalry.”

“First and foremost, I would like to thank God, Golden Boy, Cotto Promotions, and my team for this incredible opportunity,” said Valdez. “When I received the phone call, I couldn’t believe it, but without hesitation, I accepted the challenge. I stay in the gym and work hard every day, always waiting for an opportunity like this. I know who Oscar Collazo is – he is the best fighter in his division today, and I have looked up to him for a long time. It is a great honor to share the ring with him on such a big stage. I am ready to deliver the performance of my life and take full advantage of this incredible opportunity.”

Recent form

Collazo became a unified world champion after defeating Thammanoon Niyomtrong in 2024. He has since fought and defeated Edwin Cano, Jayson Vayson, and Jesús Haro. Collazo will be looking to defend his WBO world title for the eighth time and his WBA belt for the fourth time against Valdez.

Saturday night will not be the first time that Valdez has challenged for a world title. He fought Erick Rosa in 2024 for the WBA light flyweight championship, losing a unanimous decision. He has gone 1-1-1 in fights since then. Valdez’s most recent fight was a majority draw against Gerardo Rodríguez on May 30 of this year.
