The Cincinnati Reds will look to rebound this afternoon after a 17-strikeout Friday night that saw them get shutout in a 5-0 loss. The New York Yankees will try to make it two in a row to begin the 3-game series. This afternoon’s first pitch is scheduled for 1:35pm ET.

Andrew Abbott
After a very tough start to the 2026 season, Abbott made an adjustment to get back to how things were for him in 2025 and over his last nine starts his ERA is 2.47 and he’s given up just 38 hits in 51.0 innings. The last time out he allowed one run in 5.0 innings against Arizona. Despite three quality starts before that one, Cincinnati is just 1-3 in his last four outings.
The splits this season don’t quite tell the full story. Left-handed hitters have found success this season against Abbott, but all of that came in the first five weeks of the year and since he made a mechanical adjustment they’ve struggled to do much of anything against him. Right-handed hitters are walking nearly as often as they strike out and are making a lot of contact, but they have not been able to turn that into much production.

Will Warren
For the most part this season has gone well for Warren. He struggled in one start this season but has otherwise been good. His last two outings, though, he’s struggled with his pitch efficiency as he’s thrown just 4.1 and 4.0 innings against Cleveland and Toronto while allowing five total runs between those two starts. In his last four starts he’s walked 11 batters in 20.1 innings after walking just 13 in his first 52.1 innings.
The splits against Warren this season aren’t that different. Left-handed hitters are a little bit better across the board and it adds up to a 40 point advantage in OPS for them over right-handed hitters. Righties are striking out more and walking less often.

Rehab Updates
Pierce Johnson allowed a run in 1.0 innings last night for Louisville. He gave up two hits – both doubles – and he struck out one. He threw 17 pitches and 13 of those were strikes. Elly De La Cruz went 2-2 with a single, walk, and a 441-foot home run before exiting the game (as planned). De La Cruz is expected to DH today and play the full game and then play the full game at shortstop on Sunday. Emilio Pagan threw a live BP session yesterday and is getting close to a rehab assignment.
