Stephenson’s home run fuels the Reds win over the Yankees

Cincinnati got a big home run from Tyler Stephenson to grab the lead in the middle of the game. The pitching took care of the rest from there as Chase Burns and the bullpen locked down the Yankees as the Reds went into New York and took two of the three games to win the series.

Neither team could push any runs across the plate in the first two innings. That changed in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Ben Rice hit a 1-out solo home run to put the Yankees up 1-0.

In the next inning the Reds started to put together a rally when Nathaniel Lowe led off with a walk. The next two batters struck out, but Noelvi Marte lined a single into right to move Lowe up a base. Five pitches later Tyler Stephenson plated both of them with a 401-foot, 3-run go-ahead home run into left-center.

Chase Burns kept New York at one run with shutout 4th and 5th innings. In the 6th inning Cincinnati went to the bullpen to bring in Sam Moll. He retired the first two batters he faced, but then walked Jose Caballero and gave up a single to pinch hitter Amed Rosario to put runners on the corners. The Yankees then brought Paul Goldschmidt off of the bench to pinch hit and give them a righty-on-lefty matchup. Moll was up for the challenge and got a lazy fly ball to right field on the first pitch to strand both runners and hold onto the lead.

Caleb Ferguson worked around an infield single in the bottom of the 7th inning for Cincinnati. Tony Santillan then took over on the mound to begin the bottom of the 8th inning and he needed just eight pitches to record three outs and send the game to the 9th with the Reds holding onto their 3-1 lead.

Spencer Steer put the Reds in position to add to their lead when he led off with a hustle double and took third base on an error on the throw back into the infield. Noelvi Marte hit a fly ball down the right field line and it was just out of reach of Jasson Dominguez and then bounced into the seats for a ground-rule double that made it 4-1.

After a short 8th inning Tony Santillan returned for the 9th inning looking to lock up the save. He did just that, getting three fly outs to Blake Dunn in center to seal the deal in a 4-1 win that gave Cincinnati a series win over the team with the best record in the American League.

Key Moment of the Game

Tyler Stephenson’s 3-run home run that gave Cincinnati the lead in the 4th inning. They never trailed after that.

Notes Worth Noting

Blake Dunn has had three straight 2-hit games. The last two have also included a walk.

Noelvi Marte joined the Reds in early June after being demoted in mid-April. In the 13 games since his return he’s hitting .286/.333/.595 with four doubles and three home runs in 42 at-bats.

Chase Burns lowered his ERA to 2.00 on the season with his outing. He was credited with the win and is now 9-1 on the season in his 15 starts.

After an awful 5-week stretch from the start of May through June 5th where his ERA was 13.50 in 9.1 innings, Tony Santillan has been lights out. In seven games he’s thrown 7.0 shutout innings without a walk and has struck out six.

Elly De La Cruz went 0-3 with two strikeouts this afternoon for Louisville while on his Triple-A rehab assignment.
