Serena Williams is back.
This time in singles, too.
Wimbledon tournament organizers announced their final women’s singles wild card on Sunday, and — to the surprise of probably no one — it is Williams. The 44-year-old will play singles for the first time since retiring from tennis at the 2022 U.S. Open.
Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion, which includes seven Wimbledon titles.
Williams’ comeback has already featured two doubles matches during this grass-court swing. The American played with Victoria Mboko at Queen’s Club, where they advanced a round only to see Mboko withdraw because of a bad knee injury. Williams partnered Karolina Muchova this past week in Berlin, where they lost their opening match.
The Williams sisters have a wild card for the women’s doubles tournament at the All-England Club. They have won 14 major doubles titles together, including six at Wimbledon — most recently in 2016. They last teamed up at the 2022 U.S. Open, losing in the first round.
Other women’s singles wild-card recipients are French Open runner-up Maja Chwalinska and Brits Harriet Dart, Alicia Dudeney, Hannah Klugman, Mika Stojsavljevic, Katie Swan, and Mimi Xu.
