Springfield City Council clerk’s role in grant is questioned in heated debate

SPRINGFIELD — The City Council agreed Monday to spend nearly $3 million in Community Preservation Act funds to pay for 19 different projects, such as building pickleball courts and adding affordable housing in historic buildings, but one proposal for a smaller grant brought with it a big furor.

During a debate about providing a $100,000 grant for the redevelopment of the historic Brightwood School, City Councilor Justin Hurst accused the city clerk of “potentially criminal violations” and said the proposal “reeks of corruption.”
