A pitchers duel broke out at Great American Ball Park on Monday night. Neither team would put a run on the board until extra innings as Brady Singer and Brandon Woodruff traded zeroes into the 7th inning before the game turned over to the bullpens. In the end the Milwaukee Brewers took advantage of a mistake in the 10th and that was enough to outlast the Cincinnati Reds to open up their series.

Bready Singer worked a perfect 1st inning. Brandon Woodruff, fresh off of the injured list, matched him. In the next inning Singer had to work around back-to-back walks to begin the inning, but he set the Brewers down in order after that. In the 4th inning Milwaukee picked up their first hit of the game with a leadoff double by Brice Turang, but Singer worked around it.
The whole time that Singer was having his best start of the year, so was Woodruff. He had a perfect game through five innings, but his team also had just one hit and the game remained scoreless. Cincinnati would end the perfect game and no-hitter when Tyler Stephenson singled with one out in the bottom of the 6th, but he would be stranded as the game moved on to the 7th. The Reds starter returned for the next inning at 89 pitches and gave up a 2-out infield single, but got the final out three pitches later to keep the game scoreless.
After Cincinnati’s offense went down in order in the 7th the Reds made a call to the bullpen for the top of the 8th to bring in Sam Moll. The lefty needed 12 pitches to retire the side. Things went similarly in the bottom of the inning for Abner Uribe as he needed 10 pitches to send the game to the top of the 9th still knotted up at 0-0.
Tejay Antone took over to begin the 9th inning for the Reds. He began the inning with a strikeout but then gave up a single. Antone got William Contreras to fly out to right-center for the second out of the inning, but with a left-handed hitter due up manager Terry Francona headed to the mound to bring in Brock Burke to set up a lefty-on-lefty matchup with Jake Bauers. Burke would pick up a strikeout to the roar of the crowd as it was the 11th strikeout of the game, earning fans in attendance a free pizza.
Tony Santillan took over for the top of the 10th inning and he walked the first batter he faced. A sacrifice bunt then moved both runners up a base to put two men in scoring position. Joey Ortiz then hit a sacrifice fly that plated the go-ahead run and moved Garrett Mitchell to third. That was a big point in the inning because Santillan uncorked a wild pitch that then brought in Mitchell to make it 2-0.
Joel Kuhnel, just recently picked up by the Brewers in a trade after being designated for assignment, began the bottom of the 10th against his former club. Blake Dunn began the frame as the Reds free runner at second base and took third base on a groundout. Another grounder brought Dunn in but left the home team with no one on and two outs and down by a run. Dane Myers then came up and hit a liner back up the middle off of the glove of Kuhnel and he beat out the play at first base for an infield hit. Spencer Steer then hit a grounder to third base that Joey Ortiz made a sliding stop on and came up firing to record the final out of the game and give Milwaukee a 2-1 win.
Key Moment of the Game
Tony Santillan’s wild pitch that brought in the second run of the 10th inning for Milwaukee.
