Yankees Make Anthony Volpe Change After Four Straight Starts

The New York Yankees take on the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday. They’re looking to bounce back after losing the first matchup of this three-game series on Monday. In that loss, shortstop Anthony Volpe went 2-for-4 and was one of just two Yankees with multiple hits, alongside first basemanPaul Goldschmidt.

After making his season debut on May 13, the 25-year-old has seen a steady amount of playing time. He has made 27 starts at shortstop, which includes each of the Yankees’ past four games, according to FanGraphs.

He’s been solid at the plate this year, accumulating 16 runs scored, 25 hits, one home run and 13 RBIs in 93 at-bats. Volpe is also slashing .269/.376/.376 for a .752 OPS.

However, New York is looking to shift the lineup around while riding a three-game losing streak. According to Talkin’ Yanks, Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that Volpe will not be in the starting lineup on Tuesday.

“Aaron Boone tells us Anthony Volpe will be on the bench tonight against Tigers RHP Casey Mize,” Talkin’ Yanks wrote via an X post.

While his overall numbers are solid, the shortstop has struggled against right-handed pitchers this year. He is slashing just .246/.377/.316 in 57 at-bats against righties. He’s been much more efficient against left-handed pitchers with a .847 OPS.

New York is looking to stay ahead in the American League East. Before Tuesday’s matchup, they hold a two-game lead over the second-place Tampa Bay Rays. However, winning games against a struggling Tigers team, which is just 34-44, is key to holding that lead.

While Volpe is performing better than his .667 career OPS, the Yankees are opting to put him on the bench with Mize on the mound. The most likely starter at shortstop for Tuesday is Jose Caballero, who has produced a .728 OPS against righties this season.
