Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds was a worthy rival to Mario Kart when it launched last year, thanks to its unique warping mechanic, gadget system and surprise cameos.
Sega’s kart racer launched to positive reviews and sold one million copies within the first month. Despite this, its sales have “fallen short” of expectations, according to the company’s latest financial report.
“Despite strong title evaluations, sales results have fallen short of expectation,” the report reads, referring to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. Both games have an average Metascore of 82 and 87, respectively.
In response to the underwhelming performance of these titles, the report says that Sega intends to “update sales and marketing approach in response to changes in the internal and external environment.”
Sega confirmed it sold over one million copies in its first month, but has not released sales figures since then.
For comparison, its direct competitor, Mario Kart World, has sold over 14 million copies on Switch 2.
Despite its underwhelming sales, CrossWorlds is getting a second year of live-service updates with six DLC packs, including Godzilla and Neon Genesis Evangelion crossovers.
