Mumbai Indians are set to part ways with former T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav, a reliable source told CricBlogger. Owing to his prolonged dip in form, speculation had already been rife that Suryakumar might not feature for the franchise again. It is now understood that the five-time IPL champions have decided to move on from the veteran batter, with sources indicating that the decision was influenced not only by cricketing considerations but also by certain off-field factors.
However, the official stance of Mumbai Indians is that the franchise has not yet taken any decision regarding Suryakumar Yadav’s future. Yet, multiple sources have confirmed to CricBlogger that Surya is certainly on his way out, with the reasons extending beyond his performances on the field.
“These are nothing but speculations. The franchise is yet to take a call on anything,” a source close to Mumbai Indians said while dismissing of any move to part ways with the star batter.
Although Suryakumar enjoyed an excellent IPL 2025 season, his performances in 2024 and 2026 fell short of expectations. Last year, he amassed 717 runs from 16 matches at an impressive average of 65.18. However, in IPL 2026, he managed only 270 runs from 13 matches. In 2024, he scored 345 runs from 11 appearances.
As a result, performance alone cannot be viewed as the sole reason behind his impending exit.
Sources further revealed that even after India head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar agreed that it was time for a change of guard, there remained a section within the BCCI that wanted Suryakumar to be given at least one more series as captain in England. The sentiment stemmed largely from the fact that he had led India to a T20 World Cup triumph only weeks before the IPL 2026 season.
However, certain off-field developments are understood to have further damaged his prospects of continuing both as a player and as captain of the Indian team. Sources indicate that Mumbai Indians are going to take a similar view while assessing his future with the franchise.
