Tottenham make first Mateus Fernandes offer as West Ham talks intensify

Tottenham’s summer overhaul shows no signs of slowing down as Roberto De Zerbi continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Spurs have already been among the busiest clubs in the transfer market during the opening weeks of the window.

Andy Robertson was one of the first players through the door after completing his move from Liverpool.

The Scotland captain was soon followed by Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi as Tottenham moved quickly to strengthen their back line.

The club then completed a £52m deal for Netherlands international Jan Paul van Hecke, with the centre-back now reunited with De Zerbi after previously playing under the Italian during their time together at Brighton.

Tottenham have also added further experience to their squad with the arrival of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

One of the club’s biggest priorities, however, is strengthening their midfield.

Newcastle star Sandro Tonali remains a major target for De Zerbi, and reports throughout June have suggested the Italian coach views his compatriot as an ideal fit for the style of football he wants to implement in north London.

Spurs are after yet another midfielder.

Tottenham have already held discussions with Tonali’s representatives as they explore whether a deal can be made possible. However, Newcastle are understood to be demanding a huge fee for the Italy international.

Recent reports have suggested the Magpies would only consider a sale for a figure approaching £100 million, and that valuation has forced Tottenham to assess making another offer.

Another player who has also emerged as a leading target is West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.

Man United have been strongly linked with Fernandes for much of the summer. However, Tottenham have increasingly positioned themselves as serious contenders for his signature.

Talks between Spurs and West Ham have accelerated in recent days, and reports have indicated that Tottenham are making progress in negotiations as they attempt to strike an agreement.

Now, according to TEAMtalk, Tottenham have submitted a major bid for Fernandes.

The report states that £65 million of Spurs’ proposed offer would be paid ‘up front’, and the remaining £20 million of his asking price would be made up through performance-related bonuses and additional clauses.

The structure of the offer is designed to move Spurs closer to West Ham’s valuation while providing flexibility over the overall cost of the deal.

The 21-year-old joined West Ham from Southampton only last year but quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers.

His form has attracted interest from several elite clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid, PSG and United, who have all been linked with the midfielder over the last few weeks.

Tottenham, though, appear determined to get the deal completed.

Why Tottenham are leading the chase for Mateus Fernandes

Reports suggest the club have been willing to offer a more attractive financial package than rival suitors like the Red Devils, and there is also growing confidence that Fernandes is very keen to make the move to north London.

West Ham are fully aware that Fernandes remains one of their most valuable assets following relegation, and any sale would generate a significant profit on the fee they paid to sign him.

For Tottenham, securing Fernandes would represent another major statement during an increasingly ambitious transfer window.

What’s been said about Mateus Fernandes since his move to England

Even during his time at Southampton, the plucky and composed youngster was earning plaudits week in, week out.

Ex-Saints midfielder Jo Tessem lavished Fernandes for his speed and being ‘by far’ the best player there when he was at St. Mary’s.

“Mateus Fernandes is on people’s radar because every week he plays his heart out, he is by far the best player on the football pitch from a Saints perspective,” Tessem told the BBC Radio Solent Southampton podcast in 2025.

“I said the same about Romeo Lavia.

“I didn’t think he would stay for a season in the Championship and he didn’t – leaving after a year – and he [Fernandes] is on a similar level, albeit a different type of player.

“He is becoming an ultimate Premier League midfielder and clubs are not going to let that go.

“He plays like a Premier League player. He passes like a Premier League player. He is quick like a Premier League player. He conducts himself so well in midfield.”
