By Jill E. Wolforth –
I listened to a young man speak this morning to his “Ranch Brothers,” and I knew I had to write about it this week.
To set the stage, we are just about to reach the halfway point of our Summer Program training here at The Ranch.
This week alone, we had more than 50 athletes training with us. It continues to impress me how our coaching staff is able to organize each athlete’s week around his individual constraints and needs, whether that involves arm health, command, velocity, or something else entirely.
They are also managing athletes who are still playing games during the week or on weekends, which means their training weeks can look very different from one another.
It is not easy. In fact, it can often be a real challenge to manage. But it is so important, because the athletes are the ones who benefit from that level of individual attention.
And when you add the morning mindset components—yes, there is intentional time devoted to mindset—the Ranch Summer Program and its culture become something truly special.
If the conversation stopped at pitching development alone, that would be enough. It would still be rare in the baseball world.
But over the decades Coach Wolforth and I have been doing this, we have come to understand that this work is about more than baseball.
It is about developing more than baseball players.
Already this summer, two different parents have approached me to share how appreciative they are of that. It is always encouraging to hear.
But this morning, it really hit home.
One of our young athletes stood on the stage to give a short presentation to our Legacy group. As he talked about the impact the Ranch’s Summer Program has had on his life, he used a phrase that stopped me in my tracks.
He said The Ranch is “a sanctuary for your dreams.”
He talked about the new belief he has in himself. The willingness to try things he may once have been hesitant to do. The courage to stand on a stage and speak in front of others.
He talked about appreciating the support of people who may be more talented than he is, but who still want to see him improve. He talked about learning how to pick someone else up when things are not going well.
A sanctuary for your dreams.
That is not a small thing.
If we can help a young man believe in himself again, pursue what is possible for his life, become a better son, a better friend, a better spouse, or a better dad someday, now that is a big thing.
And it truly warms my heart.
