Ryan Flournoy’s road to the NFL initially appeared closed-off when no FBS programs offered him a scholarship. The former Southeast Missouri State star wide receiver found his way into the league when the Dallas Cowboys selected him in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but his pathway to productivity remained murky.
His prospects became even bleaker when George Pickens joined a pass-catching group that already featured CeeDee Lamb, Jake Ferguson and KaVontae Turpin.
Flournoy did not turn back, however. He hopped over the barriers and earned a meaningful role on one of the league’s best offenses. The 26-year-old will enter training camp with vital momentum after solidifying himself as a wideout to watch.
“It definitely had a big impact on it, just because I know I belong,” Flournoy said, per Tommy Yarrish of Cowboys.com. “I know the offense now, I know how to operate as a professional. Coming in from college, coming in from a small school, you kind of get drowned out. Just trying to navigate what works for you and seeing what works for others, my confidence skyrocketed after I found what worked for me.”
The 2022 First-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection recorded 40 receptions for 475 yards and four touchdowns with Dallas last season, ranking in the top-four on the team in all three categories. Lamb’s injury issues afforded Ryan Flournoy additional targets, but he produced even when the All-Pro talent was on the field.
With the season essentially on the line, this 6-foot-1 underdog totaled nine catches for 115 yards and a TD in a Week 14 clash with the Detroit Lions. The Cowboys lost the matchup and missed the playoffs once again, but Flournoy proved himself to be an effective WR worthy of more opportunities going forward.
Do not expect him to let up now, though. Overlooked FCS players who become Day 3 draft picks tend to stay hungry, and that should only excite quarterback Dak Prescott and the Cowboys.
