JBL has made his pick for the main event of WWE Night of Champions, and he is backing GUNTHER to dethrone Cody Rhodes.
Speaking on Something to Wrestle ahead of Saturday’s show in Saudi Arabia, the WWE Hall of Famer predicted GUNTHER would walk out of the triple threat as Undisputed WWE Champion, with the match’s format providing built-in protection for Rhodes.
“Give me GUNTHER,” JBL said. “In a triple threat match, so many things can happen that you have a reason for the babyface to have a b—- about it, because the babyface loses the title without being pinned. Now, all of a sudden, it’s a natural rematch that you have.”
JBL feels the time has come for the company to fully commit to GUNTHER at the top. “GUNTHER is a guy they’ve been having to beat and retire everybody. At some point, you’ve got to put the main strap on him,” he said. “I hope, I think this is the time. I don’t know if it is or not. I’m a big fan of GUNTHER, and a big fan of Cody and Sami also, but give me GUNTHER to win this thing.”
The conversation also prompted JBL to share a personal regret about the Saudi Arabia shows. The notoriously flight-averse Hall of Famer revealed he opted out of the trips during his time with WWE.
“Vince was like, ‘I’m not going to send you to Saudi, I know you don’t like to get on a plane,’” JBL recalled. He now wishes he had gone at least once. “I do kind of regret not going. I still want to go once, to see all the old biblical sites and see Saudi.”
