Blue Jays recall Adam Macko, Simeon Woods Richardson DFA’d

Adam Macko is back in the big leagues.

On Friday, the Toronto Blue Jays announced that Macko had been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo and would be active for Friday’s contest.

ROSTER MOVES:

🔹 LHP Adam Macko recalled from Triple-A and will be active tonight

🔹 RHP Simeon Woods Richardson designated for assignment

Macko returns to Toronto for his second stint with the club this season. The 25-year-old made his MLB debut on May 18 at Yankee Stadium and has pitched in 12 games during his first season in the majors.

Through 12 games (one start), Macko is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. The left-hander has worked in 12 innings and has retired 12 batters via the punchout across those frames. The Slovakian-born, Canadian-raised pitcher has picked up three holds and held opposing teams to a .244 average against during his first stint with the club.

Macko was optioned to Buffalo on June 9 to make room for the return of right-hander Dylan Cease. While none of these numbers are worthy of a demotion, Macko was the only arm who carried options, resulting in hime being sent down without the risk of losing a player.
In a corresponding move to make room for Macko, the Blue Jays designated Simeon Woods Richardson for assignment. Woods Richardson was acquired from the Minnesota Twins on June 3 in exchange for cash considerations, as the Blue Jays were dealing with a plethora of injuries to their pitching staff.

Woods Richardson joined the Blue Jays’ organization for the second time in his career after being DFA’d by the Twins. Through 12 games (10 starts) with the Twins before the trade, Woods Richardson was 0-7 with a 7.74 ERA and 1.89 WHIP, and was being hit at a .330 clip.

After being added to the active roster on June 5, Woods Richardson pitched in three games with the Blue Jays and flashed the most success he’s shown through much of his big-league career to this point. Over 10 innings, Woods Richardson is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 1.10 WHIP while punching out five batters in his 10 frames.

While Woods Richardson has been able to hold opposing teams to a .129 average, the 25-year-old has walked seven batters, including four during Thursday night’s 6-5 loss against the Texas Rangers.

For the season, Woods Richardson is 1-7 with a 6.40 ERA and 1.75 WHIP over his 15 games pitched. After pitching well during his brief stint with the Blue Jays, a second trade of the year for the former top prospect could be in the works as clubs try to untap the potential that made him a second-round pick during the 2018 MLB Draft.
