Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic are among the oldest players competing at Wimbledon this year.

Williams has returned to tennis at the age of 44 after a break of almost four years, while Djokovic is still going strong at the age of 39.

And according to former ATP number one Mats Wilander, the American could have a big impact on the Serbian at Wimbledon.

Serena Williams expected to have big impact on Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon

Wilander told TNT Sports: “I think the fact that Serena Williams is playing is going to be an inspiration for everybody.

“I do think that it’s pretty important that Serena plays well, that she wins maybe a match or two, that she shows that, hey, at 44 years old, I’m still competitive, it’s still possible.

“For Novak, who is five years younger than Serena, I think it will be a huge inspiration.

“It’s not like Djokovic needs inspiration anymore, because he’s inspiring himself, but if you are going to change something, I think Serena Williams could be a huge help, not just for Novak, but for everybody to realise that your tennis career can actually be 20 to 25 years long.

“For Djokovic, I think it only has to do with the mental inspiration that Serena is going to bring.”

Very fittingly, Williams and Djokovic have each claimed the title at Wimbledon a stunning seven times throughout their epic careers.

And Djokovic, who is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam title, will play against 26-year-old Wu Yibing from China.

It remains to be seen which legendary figure will go further at the All England Club, where they will be joined by a handful of other hugely experienced stars.

That includes 37-year-old Marin Cilic, 41-year-old Stan Wawrinka, and of course WTA icon Venus Williams, who is 46.
