Pitts was originally set to play out the season under the franchise tag.
Still, his impressive performance in the 2025 season, in which he recorded 88 receptions for 928 yards and 5 touchdowns, persuaded the front office to invest in him as a key asset for head coach Kevin Stefanski’s emerging offensive strategy.
This significant investment aligns well with the coaching staff’s high internal evaluations of Pitts. In a candid assessment reported by The New York Times, Stefanski, known for his attention to detail, stated that he has no complaints about the young player’s work ethic. While he acknowledged that Pitts’ unique size and agility are undeniable advantages on the field, he also expressed deep appreciation for the tight end’s mental development and adaptability during recent team workouts, stating:
“Obviously, the physical skill set is obvious when Kyle’s on the field, with how big he is and how he moves, but I’ve been impressed with a couple new things we’re asking him to do. As your players continue on in their careers, you want to find out more: What else is in there? And what else can we do? And what can we help you with? I think Kyle’s been outstanding in that regard of trying to continue to get better in so many areas.”

On a recent episode of ESPN’s NFL Live, two-time Super Bowl champion Booger McFarland shared a more cautious viewpoint. While he appreciates the financial commitment, he is not entirely convinced about it.
McFarland emphasized that NFL contracts often reward future potential rather than past achievements. He noted that, despite Kyle Pitts’ recent statistical improvement, the young pass-catcher has not fully lived up to the high expectations set for him when he entered the league.
