Packers’ Million Signing Was Part Of More Reserved Offseason For Green Bay

Over the past two offseasons, general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers stepped out of character to take some massive swings.

Whether it was signing All-Pro safety Xavier McKinney and former rushing champion and All-Pro running back Josh Jacobs in 2024, or pulling off a blockbuster to acquire All-Pro Micah Parsons to anchor the pass rush last summer, Green Bay uncharacteristically was among the most active franchises adding top veteran talent.

This past offseason, though, was not quite that.

Packers were much more restrained this offseason

According to CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell, only four teams spent less in free agency than the Packers’ $78.81 million.

However, Green Bay’s most expensive signing, $23.1 million to defensive lineman Javon Hargrave could pay massive dividends for the Packers’ defense.

“Signing two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Javon Hargrave filled a key need for Green Bay’s defense,” Podell writes for CBS. “Starting defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt fractured his fibula and tore ligaments in his ankle in the Packers’ 31-24 Thanksgiving victory over the Detroit Lions. The addition of Hargrave will allow Wyatt to ensure he’s 100% before returning to action.”

Hargrave isn’t just a potential upgrade up front, but a big bet that reuniting with Packers defensive coordinator, from their experience together with the Philadelphia Eagles, will bring out the best in the veteran tackle.

After some massive spending in previous years, the Packers’ targeted approach to upgrading in key positions was made possible because of the upgrades pulled off with the McKinney, Jacobs, and Parsons additions and the impacts those moves made.
