Max Muncy faced off against Max Muncy today in what I can only describe as The Battle Of Max Muncy, and Max Muncy had a big day while Max Muncy had a quality day but not as good as Max Muncy, who led Max Muncy to beat Max Muncy, 9-4.
That’s pretty clear, right? Right.
Dodgers win.
======
The Athletics started rookie Gage Jump, who worked around a single in the 1st for a clean start. The scoring started in the 2nd after a bit of fortune as a quirk of this minor-league park, as Teoscar Hernandez deflected a ball off two players for a single, and Kyle Tucker hit a high flyball for a single that cornered the runners when both outfielders lost it in the sun.

Max Muncy followed with a single for the game’s first run, then with one down Dalton Rushing singled himself to make it 2-0. The Dodgers did strand cornered runners with just one out, but at least they did damage in the 2nd.

On the other end, Eric Lauer‘s luck finally turned for the worse in this game, though weirdly he was relatively lucky to not have it get out of control despite that. He started by making a stellar behind-the-back snag, though he did throw away a dribbler for an infield single before getting out of the 1st.

The 2nd is when things got rough, as Colby Thomas started the scoring for the A’s with a homer.

Lauer then gave up three-straight softly hit singles, including Josh Kuroda-Grauer first hit to tie the game at 2-2.

Henry Bolte then hit a fliner but outran a double play attempt to give the A’s a 3-2 lead.
That was where the rally ended, but … unfortunate for Eric at that point.

Things looked bleak again in the 3rd, as a pair of one-out singles started a rally and a two-out walk loaded the bases, but Lauer helped himself again with a nice play on a comebacker to escape.

That started a streak of nine batters in a row retired for Lauer, and even though a pair of two-out singles in the 6th broke that up, Lauer of course got the final out for a quality start.

That’s Eric Lauer, that’s quality: 6 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 95 Pitches.

When he exited, he did so with the lead.
Jump gave up two singles in the 3rd, but gave up no damage thanks to a double play sandwiched between. In the 4th, Max Muncy started with his 17th homer of the year to tie things at 3-3.

A double from Miguel Rojas followed and looked like it might be stranded after two outs, but Andy Pages stepped up and bombed his 16th to left to give the Dodgers a 5-3 lead.

Jump continued in the 5th, but the pen entered after a two-out single to get the final out. They could not limit the damage in the 6th, as Rojas led things off with a single, Rushing singled, and then Ohtani hit a missile to right for his 18th homer for a comfortable 8-3 lead.

They got through the 6th after that, then had a quiet 7th, but singles from Rushing and Ohtani put the A’s in trouble again in the 8th. The Dodgers only added one from that when Freddie Freeman poked a single to make it 9-3.

They stranded a lead-off walk in the 9th to close the book on the offense.

For the Dodgers pen, Kyle Hurt got the 7th and had a promising out in which he struck out the side.

To save the rest of the pen, Jonathan Hernandez was tasked with not making it exciting in the 8th, and he issued just a walk in the inning. He then started the 9th, but gave up a bloop double and a single before getting an out. That led to Jack Dreyer entering to finish things off, but not before he uncorked a wild pitch on a walk to make it 9-4. Dreyer did then get the final two batters to end the game and secure the win.
======
55-30, six wins in their last seven.
The series continues tomorrow at 3:40 PM HT/6:40 PM PT/9:40 PM ET with Justin Wrobleski looking to continue his quality run against Jeffrey Springs.
