Sami Zayn Admits WWE Title Chase Nearly Broke Him Before Night of Champions Win

Sami Zayn finally has the WWE Championship on his shoulder, and now he’s admitting the chase nearly broke him.

While speaking on Raw Recap, Zayn said he is still trying to wrap his head around winning the title at Night of Champions. After years of close calls and people saying he would never get there, Sami said the biggest feeling right now is relief.

“I’m still processing it a lot, believe it or not. It’s kinda hard to fully take in. But I suppose if I had to answer in one word – it feels just… great. It really does. It feels like the weight of the world’s off my shoulders.”

That pressure had been eating at him for a while, and Sami didn’t pretend otherwise. He said fans watched him spiral because he wanted the title so badly.

“I think anyone who’s paid attention has seen that I kinda drove myself to the edge of sanity a little bit there for a while just by putting so much pressure on myself to win this thing. And it’s here, and I feel like I can just breathe. It feels great.”

Sami said losing to Roman Reigns in Montreal at Elimination Chamber 2023 hurt, but it didn’t shake his belief. The one that really messed with him was losing to Drew McIntyre at the 2026 Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia.

“The one that really did my head in a little bit was coming up short against Drew this past January at the Royal Rumble. Because after that one, that’s when I was already starting to feel… I felt like maybe I’d missed my window.”

That is where things got heavy. Sami said he knew he belonged with names like Drew, Roman, Cody, and Seth, but watching newer stars like Trick Williams, Oba Femi, Je’Von Evans, and Bron Breakker heat up made him wonder if WWE had already moved on.

“And I was starting to see the sea change with Trick, and the fans getting behind Trick, and they kind of moved on from my story. And they were into Oba and Je’Von and Bron Breakker. There was this idea that, ‘Oh my god, their window is opening and I think mine might have closed.’”

Now that he actually has the title, Sami said he is proud he never changed who he was just to get there. The win mattered, but the way he won mattered even more.

“I think the biggest thing is the way I won it. That’s a really big deal to me. I didn’t cheat, I didn’t knock out a referee, there was nothing nefarious about it. I rolled him up with a wrestling hold and I won. Middle of the ring. Just like I said 10 years ago, ‘I’m gonna win this the right way,’ and I did. So I’m immensely proud of myself for that.”

So yeah, Sami Zayn didn’t just win a title. He got proof that his window wasn’t closed after all. It may have looked like WWE was moving on without him, but at Night of Champions, Sami kicked the door back open and walked out as champion.
