Chelsea and sister club Strasbourg have been hit by UEFA fines for overspending last season, a statement released today revealed.

Chelsea were probably pretty pleased with themselves after yesterday. The Blues got a whopping £17m from Manchester City for Enzo Maresca, plus an apology from the man himself. Then they have their new man, Xabi Alonso, starting work tomorrow.

But it wouldn’t be Chelsea without a bit of bad news to balance the good. The Blues have been hit by a €3m fine from UEFA (of which €1m is suspended) for breaking the Squad Cost Ratio rules. The penalty takes into account the positive direction of travel from the Blues.

Meanwhile, BlueCo’s other major asset got his far harder – especially in relative terms. Strasbourg have been given a monster €25m fine, €12m of which is suspended.

Their gamble on spending big backfired – they missed out on the Champions League, and even their run to the Conference League semi finals has now been cancelled out financially by this fine.

This makes it a very interesting summer for them – they’ve lost their manager, lost several key players, are out of European football entirely and now have this bad news piled on top. We can’t imagine their protests are going anywhere.

In other news…

Some pundits have not taken kindly to the Chelsea statement about Enzo Maresca which was released yesterday.

Chelsea could yet sell Andrey Santos, despite the fact that the Brazilian has only had one (quite impressive) season in the first team.
