History Created: New Zealand Wins the Women’s T20 World Cup For the First Time

New Zealand, led by Sophie Devine, defeated South Africa to win the Women’s T20 World Cup, becoming  the fourth country to do it in the competition’s history. With their 2024 T20 championship, New Zealand’s women have only won a major ICC Women’s competition twice, the first being their home success in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2000.

After being invited to bat first by the Proteas in Dubai, the White Ferns, who were playing in their third final but first since 2010, put on an incredible display. They amassed 158/5 in the first innings thanks to contributions from Melie Kerr (43), Brooke Halliday (38), and Suzie Bates (32). Additionally, South Africa’s chase was thwarted by three-wicket hauls from Kerr (3/24) and Rosemary Mair (3/25) as the Kiwi players celebrated on the Dubai field after finishing 32 runs behind.

Rosemary Mair further limited South Africa’s scoring options with her three wickets for 25 runs, which was a substantial contribution. Even with a strong middle order effort from South Africa, they were unable to reach the mark, finishing at 126/9, 32 runs short. Rosemary said “Pretty Unbelievable to be honest. Coming into the World Cup, all the odds were against it and to win the World Cup is pretty unbelievable. The batters put up a fantastic total for us to defend and to pull them back from overs 6 to 10 was special,” in her winning speech.

In the semi-finals, the Kiwis defeated a formidable West Indies team in Sharjah, maintaining composure to win by eight runs and go to the final in Dubai on Sunday.
