Arshdeep Singh, who debuted with Punjab Kings in IPL 2019, has played 65 matches and taken 76 wickets
One of the biggest shocks on IPL retention day was Punjab Kings’ decision to release Arshdeep Singh, a move that surprised many, given his status as a standout bowler for the team. Punjab Kings have retained only two capped players: Shashank Singh for ₹5.5 crore and Prabhsimran Singh for ₹4 crore.
Arshdeep Singh, who debuted with Punjab Kings in IPL 2019, has played 65 matches and taken 76 wickets, including one five-wicket haul.
According to some reports, the decision to release Arshdeep Singh may be because the franchise didn’t want to retain him for ₹18 crores. They believe that if he enters the auction, he might be bought for a lower amount, allowing PBKS to use one of their four RTM options. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether they will pursue Arshdeep with the RTM option.

Arshdeep frustrated after not being retained
It is clear that Arshdeep Singh is unhappy about not being retained, as he has removed all posts, photos, and highlights related to Punjab Kings from his account.
By releasing Arshdeep to the auction, PBKS has let go of a homegrown player who was a cherished figure among fans. It appears that many within the franchise did not recognize that Arshdeep held more value for PBKS than he would for any other team. He was the face of the franchise, having played solely for them and earning his call-up to the national team through his performances with the franchise.
The franchise thinks that Arshdeep won’t draw a bid as high as 18 crores, allowing them to use the Right to Match (RTM) option if needed. However, if he does receive a higher bid during the auction, it could put Punjab Kings in a tough spot. By releasing Arshdeep, PBKS has taken a significant risk, as he was an important player for them.
Arshdeep Singh was a key player in the T20 World Cup, where he shared the title of joint highest wicket-taker and contributed significantly to India’s success in lifting the trophy. He is currently recognized as the best left-arm fast bowler in India.
