The vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rajeev Shukla, has replied to a comment made by Shiv Sena Leader Aditya Thackeray. Thackeray said that the BCCI should not move the World Cup final from Mumbai. It’s important to note that the Indian Cricket Team received a warm welcome in Mumbai when they returned from Barbados after winning the T20 World Cup in 2024.
The BCCI arranged a special parade for the World Cup winners, and many people came to see their favorite players in person. The whole team was also honored at the Wankhede Stadium in front of a full crowd that cheered loudly for the Indian team.
Seeing the love to for cricket in the people of Mumbai, Thackeray took to his X account and wrote, “Yesterday’s celebration in Mumbai is also a strong message to the BCCI Never take away a World Cup final from Mumbai ˆ!.
“BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla has also responded to the statement, arguing that it is against the cricket board’s policy for the final always to be held in one city. “Where the final should take place is BCCI’s policy . It cannot always be given to a particular city : there has been a final match – 1987 World Cup – at Kolkata also and it is considered a Mecca . Therefore it cannot be predetermined that it should always be done in one city,” Shukla told PTI”
The semis and finals are taking place in Mumbai. Similarly, the capacity of Ahmedabad ground is 130,000, hence we also go by capacity.” Kolkata (Eden Gardens) has a large capacity, approximately 80,000 spectators (approx. 66,000) can be accommodated there. Similarly, other cities also.” In particular, India emerged as the victorious in the ODI World Cup 2011 at the Wankhede Stadium.
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad hosted the finals of the last year’s tournament that took place in India. In this case, it boasts a capacity of around 1,30,000. The final was between Australia and India, whereby the former won leading to a breakdown of cricket fans all over India.
Speaking ahead, Shukla disclosed that he was very pleased with the welcome Mumbai gave them for the victory parade and said that the city is always first on their list.
