The BCCI has announced Gautam Gambhir as India’s next head coach, succeeding Rahul Dravid, whose tenure concluded with India’s triumphant T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. The announcement was made by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward.”

Gambhir’s Appointment
Gambhir will take over the reins from July 2024 for a term of three and a half years, extending until December 2027. He will oversee the Indian cricket team across all three formats – Test, ODI, and T20I. The BCCI had advertised for the head coach position and set a deadline for applications as May 27. Despite a formal application process, Gambhir emerged as the favored candidate following discussions during IPL 2024, where he played a pivotal role as the mentor of the title-winning Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Coaching Experience
Prior to his stint with KKR, Gambhir served as the mentor for Lucknow Super Giants during IPL 2022 and 2023, guiding the team to playoff berths in both seasons. These roles marked his entry into coaching following a distinguished playing career. Gambhir’s on-field achievements include crucial performances in India’s victories at the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, where he top-scored in both finals. He also led KKR to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014.
Desire to Coach India
Gambhir’s appointment comes after he expressed his desire to coach the national team at an event in Abu Dhabi on June 1. Responding to a youngster’s question about helping India win the World Cup, Gambhir said, “There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. Representing 140 crore Indians is the greatest privilege. If everyone starts praying for us and we play fearlessly, India will win the World Cup. I would love to coach India.”
Path to Appointment
Gambhir became the frontrunner after his former teammate VVS Laxman, the current director of cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, declined interest in the role. Laxman is currently coaching India on an interim basis during their five-match T20I series in Zimbabwe.
Dravid’s Legacy
Rahul Dravid, who took over from Ravi Shastri in November 2021, initially signed a two-year contract until the 2023 ODI World Cup. He extended his tenure at the BCCI’s request until the end of the T20 World Cup 2024. Under Dravid’s leadership, India clinched their first ICC trophy since 2013, ending his coaching stint on a high note.
