Jasprit Bumrah, India’s star fast bowler, created history on 18 December by becoming the all-time highest Indian Test wicket-taker in Australia. Bumrah broke Kapil Dev’s 51-wicket record during the second session of play on the fifth day of the ongoing third Test match at the Gabba. Bumrah opened his wicket account in the second innings, first by removing Usman Khawaja (8), then in the next over got rid of Marnus Labuschagne.
While Khawaja was clean bowled by the legendary Indian pacer, Labuschagne was caught behind by Rishabh Pant.
Bumrah has 52 wickets from 10 Tests played in Australia so far while Kapil Dev ended his career with 51 wickets from 11 Tests on Australian soil.
Star Australian spinner Nathan Lyon finds himself in the number 1 position by picking the most wickets in Test matches played between India and Australia in Australia. Thus far in the 18 Tests played between the two countries in Australia, Lyon had taken 63 wickets.
Ranked ICC No. 1 Test bowler Bumrah took six Aussie batsmen for 76 runs in the first innings of the Brisbane Test. On Monday, Bumrah broke the record of 130 wickets held by Ishant Sharma towards being India’s most successful pace bowler in Test matches played in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries by taking his sixth wicket of the match.
Ishant, who last played a Test match for India in 2021, has 130 wickets to his name in 41 matches played in SENA countries. He dismissed 31 batters in 13 Tests played in Australia and 51 batters in 15 matches played on English soil. In six and seven Tests played in New Zealand and South Africa, Ishant accounted for the dismissal of 28 and 20 batters, respectively.
On the contrary, Bumrah has proven himself in SENA with 133 wickets so far in his 29 Tests. The 31-year-old fast bowler got his 52 Test wickets playing in Australia (10 matches), 37 wickets in England (nine Tests), six wickets in New Zealand (two Tests), and 38 Test wickets from eight matches played on South African soil.
The legendary Anil Kumble is the only bowler to take 141 wickets in SENA countries compared to Bumrah’s mark. While he was whooping and swooping his way to the halls of fame, Kumble would get rid of 141 batters in 35 matches played in SENA countries.
