Android Port Challenge Wraps Up, Opening Africa’s Gaming Worlds to Millions – Esports Africa News

When Africacomicade first announced the Android Port Challenge, the idea sounded simple: take some of Africa’s most exciting PC and console titles and bring them to mobile devices where most of the continent’s gamers actually play. But behind that simplicity was a bold ambition: prove that African-made games can compete in the same mobile spaces dominated by global studios, and back them to succeed.

“Africa’s gaming market is overwhelmingly mobile-first,” explains Oscar Michael, Founder of Africacomicade. “In recent years, we’ve seen many brilliant game projects from the continent  target PC and console platforms because of funding, distribution and monetization opportunities, but most players here can’t access them. The Android Port Challenge was our way of bridging that gap.”

The program offered developers technical expertise, funding, publishing support, and marketing muscle to make the jump from desktop to Android. And it wasn’t just about conversion; it was about adaptation: taking worlds designed for a mouse and keyboard and reimagining them for thumbs and touchscreens.

Three Worlds, Three Journeys

After a rigorous selection process, three indie studios were chosen, each with a story, a community, and a creative vision that deserved a wider audience.

“Porting Outliver to Android was like moving a theater performance into a street festival,” laughs studio founder, Mudathir Giwa. “It’s still the same show, but more immediate, more tactile. The audience changes, the energy remains the same and that’s exciting.”

More Than a Port, It’s a Movement

The Android Port Challenge was more than a technical exercise. It was a statement that African games deserve to live where African gamers are. By putting high-quality, narrative-driven titles on the devices most people own, Africacomicade is closing a gap that has long kept local creations out of local hands.

“These games now have a second life,” says Oscar. “They’ll be promoted at events, not just to global publishers, but to African players who can finally experience them.”

With the first edition wrapped, Africacomicade is already gearing up for round two. The Two games in Pre-registration will be launched at the Gamathon Industry Day, Friday October 2nd , 2025 . Applications for the next Android Port Challenge tagged “Android Game Development Challenge” will also be launched on the same day, with a continued focus on titles with strong storytelling and cultural resonance.

For the developers, it’s a win. For the industry, it’s a step forward. And for millions of African gamers, it’s a chance to step into worlds that were once out of reach but now just a tap away.
