Bizarre scenes with WBBL match abandoned due to freak incident

A freak incident during the change of innings caused umpires to call off a crucial WBBL match midway through the fixture after a hole emerged in the wicket.

After Adelaide had posted 4-167 from their 20 overs at Karen Rolton Oval, an errant throw from Strikers allrounder Amanda-Jane Wellington during the warm-up rolled onto the pitch.

Unfortunately, the groundstaff were also rolling the pitch and the ball was wedged underneath the heavy roller.

The end result was a cricket ball-sized hole on a good length in the middle of the wicket.

WBBL officials issued a statement to say the match between the Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes had to be called off under the circumstances.

“During the innings break and with teams warming up, a ball was inadvertently rolled onto the pitch while the roller was being used. The ball went beneath the roller creating a hole in the pitch.

“As a result, the pitch conditions were changed significantly. After consultation between the match referee and the umpires, it was considered unreasonable to expect the Hurricanes to bat in conditions that were materially different than those the Strikers had experienced.

“Both team captains were consulted by the officials and were accepting of this decision.”

In an already competitive battle to snare playoff spots, it further complicates the finals equation.

It is the third time this year that the Strikers have failed to get a result in their nine matches.

Melbourne Renegades beat Sydney Sixers earlier on Friday which means Hobart have sealed top spot.

But the Strikers are in a fight with four other teams with only two competition points between them in sixth spot and the second-placed Melbourne Stars.
