Proteas crush Ireland in 1st T20I at Newlands

The Proteas dominated Ireland in the first T20I of the series with a 105-run win after an incredible batting performance led by captain Laura Wolvaardt, who scored a record-breaking 115.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the Proteas put on a dominant display with the bat, scoring a record-breaking 220 from their 20 overs.

Laura Wolvaardt played an incredible knock, scoring 115 off just 56 balls (15 fours, 4 sixes). This became her highest-ever score in a T20 as well as the fastest century by any South African woman in history.

Every time Wolvaardt plays at Newlands, she reaches a milestone. She has 3 half-centuries and a century to her name at the ground.

Sune Luus also put in an incredible performance, scoring 81 from 51 balls.

Ava Canning (1-33) and Jane Maguire (1-52) were the wicket takers for Ireland.

As expected, Ireland struggled a lot during their chase due to the sheer quality of the Proteas bowling attack.

Sune Luus bowled exceptionally well, taking 4-22 from her 4 overs.

Nonkululeko Mlaba (2-9), Chloe Tryon (2-14), Nondumiso Shangase (1-13) and Nadine De Klerk (1-13) also contributed with the ball.

Leah Paul 34 (23) and Gaby Lewis 30 (29) were Ireland’s highest run scorers.

Ireland were skittled for 115.

The Proteas won by 105 runs.
