Fabio Fognini brought an end to his impressive tennis career in 2025, after taking Carlos Alcaraz to the limit in the first round of Wimbledon.
Fognini reached a career-high of world number nine in the ATP Tour rankings and won nine career titles, including the Monte Carlo Masters in 2019.
The Italian still keeps a watchful eye on tennis despite hanging up his racket following his appearance at Wimbledon.
The star has heaped praise on Jannik Sinner, and also shared the attributes he has over the world number two.
Fabio Fognini compares himself with Jannik Sinner
Fognini defended Sinner’s decision to skip the Davis Cup and he has often shared details about his friendship with the world number two.
The Italian discussed the key difference between him and Sinner in a brand-new interview with Punto De Break.
Who do you think will win more Grand Slam titles in 2026?
He said: “Sinner is the best in the world; of course, I would sign up to be him if given the chance. But Jannik would also consider living as Fabio.
“What do I have that Jannik doesn’t? I have spontaneity, I am very temperamental. I tell you things directly to your face. But it is difficult to compare us; we are completely different personalities.”
The Italian also shared that he is yet to play tennis since retiring from the sport, which is now six months ago.
Jannik Sinner and Fabio Fognini’s sole meeting on the ATP Tour
There was a brief crossover between Fognini and Sinner on the ATP Tour, but the pair were only able to play one match.
They met at the Rome Open in 2022, when Sinner was just 20-years-old, but he still had too much for the veteran star.
Sinner defeated his compatriot in three sets in the second round of his home competition, to set up a match with Filip Krajinović.
Sinner won that match too but became unstuck in the quarterfinals as he lost out to Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets.
The tournament was won by Novak Djokovic, who defeated Tsitsipas in the final in straight sets, the first of which was a bagel.
