While William Regal has become synonymous with the WWE Universe for announcing, “WAR GAMES!” this proclamation isn’t the first epic saying that made William Regal memorable. William Regal and Umaga had separate reins of terror over the Raw locker room from 2006 to 2009. Long before William Regal became the beloved General Manager of NXT, he was a self-professed “villain” as Raw General Manager in 2007 and 2008.

William Regal’s Raw GM role coincided with the debut and rise of Umaga. With Armando Estrada in his corner, The Samoan Bulldozer was thrust into the Main Event scene, getting into memorable wars with Ric Flair, Jeff Hardy, and John Cena.

Inevitably, the top babyfaces would clash with the evil GM William Regal. Therefore, William Regal would use Umaga as a mercenary during various points of his run with power.

However, whenever William Regal threatened a Superstar with punishment from Umaga, it would always cause fans to scratch their heads. That’s because William Regal would always call Umaga “Umanga.”

Why Did William Regal Say Umaga’s Name Wrong?

For many years, people wondered if William Regal’s pronunciation of Umaga was a language barrier. Perhaps the United Kingdom legend found it difficult to say such a unique name. However, this wasn’t the case at all.

Simply put, William Regal was adding some subtle comedic depth to his character while attempting to make Umaga more memorable. A tweet that William Regal posted over ten years ago confirms why the former Raw GM called him Umanga:

A 2015 tweet from William Regal explaining the genesis of Umanga

Umanaga and the actual Umaga are both very memorable. While Umanga’s legacy lives on through video compilations, Umaga’s legacy lives on through The Bloodline.

Umaga was born Edward “Eddie Fatu,” nephew of Afa and Sika. Therefore, Roman Reigns and Rosey were Umaga’s cousins.

In addition, Umaga was the younger brother of Rikishi, making him the uncle of The Usos and Solo Sikoa. There’s no doubt that the man whose family members called “Eki” is looking down at his Bloodline with pride.
