IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Beginning Monday September 29th, Victoria Park East is beginning a much-needed upgrade to the irrigation system.
Here is a special message from David DeCorso, Superintendent and General Manager:
“Victoria Park East still has the original irrigation pipe from 1973. Life expectancy of an irrigation system is 30 years for the pipe. We are long overdue. This is a major project and will impact the entire golf course. The new system will be much more efficient with today’s technology, and you will hopefully not see Jack and his staff waist-deep in an irrigation hole as often, because a 50-year-old glue joint has failed! It is important to note the area of watered turf will not increase that much from what we currently irrigate. We will not be watering “wall to wall” (the entire golf course including roughs), as we simply do not have enough water for this. Our main irrigation source is ground water from a deep well. The amount of water we are allowed to use is determined by the province and is highly regulated.
The plan is to complete one hole at time – starting with the last few holes, 17, 18, then 16 – while tying into the existing system to ensure we still have water until the course is closed, and we blow out the lines. After that, the contractor can install the main lines. There will be times of the day when we will require golfers to bypass the hole being worked-on. This will be communicated on a daily basis. It may take on average 2-3 days to complete a hole depending on its length, soil conditions, weather etc. The contractor has assured us that the completed work will be put back to professional standards; in saying that, there will still be many “ground under repair” areas until the turf heals completely. The project will continue until the ground freezes up and the conditions are workable and is expected to be completed some time next spring.”
