Richard Carapaz completed his collection of victories in cycling’s Grand Tours by winning stage 17 of the Tour de France 2024. Already a stage winner at the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España, and an Olympic road race gold medalist, Carapaz secured his first Tour de France stage win with an impressive solo effort in the Alps.
This victory also marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the first Ecuadorian to win a stage at the Tour. Riding for Education-EasyPost, Carapaz’s triumph adds another significant achievement to his illustrious cycling career.

The Tour de France 2024 is the 111th edition of the prestigious cycling race, running from June 29 to July 21. The race covers a diverse and challenging route, including various mountain stages, flat sprints, and individual time trials, starting in Florence, Italy, and finishing on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, France.
Riders gathered in Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux for the start of stage 17 of the 2024 Tour de France. The Tour de France organizer, Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), crafted a captivating route through the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France.The 177.8-kilometer course of this year’s Tour de France led riders into the Alps on a demanding and mountainous route from Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux to Superdevoluy.
The stage’s finale featured a Category 3 climb, following earlier tests on both Category 2 and Category 1 climbs. Riders also faced fast and challenging descents.
Elmar Reinders (Jayco-Alula) and Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain – Victorious) did not start the stage. One was sidelined due to illness, while the other became a father overnight.
