The World Table Tennis Championships first took place in 1926 in London, England. However, since the year 2000, the Championship has been split into two separate competitions.
Team events are now held in even numbered years, whilst individual events (singles and doubles) are held in odd numbered years.
So 2024 is the year for the team events to be contested, and Busan, South Korea stage the event from 16-25 February 2024.

The World Table Tennis Championships 2024 events are…
The Swaythling Cup was donated in 1926 by Lady Baroness Swaythling, mother of
Ivor Montagu, whilst the Corbillon Cup was donated in 1933 by Marcel Corbillon, President of the French TTA, for the first Women’s Team event at the 1934 World Championships.
However, the original Corbillon Cup disappeared just after World War Two, so the German Table Tennis Federation paid for an exact replica in 1949 (the German Women’s team won the Cup in the 1939 World Championships – the last time it was played before the outbreak of World War Two).
The following equipment is being used at the 2024 World Team Championships…

The 2024 World Team Championships are being played as a single Division of 40 teams, with 8 groups of 5 teams each.
Each group of 5 teams will play a complete round robin competition (4 matches per team).
The order of play and the scheduling of the matches will try to avoid, whenever possible, the possibility of “predetermining” results so that all final round matches are significant for each competing team.
Following the completion of the round robin in each group, a single knockout will be played with the top 3 teams in each group progressing to the knockout phase (24 teams).
The winners of each group (8 teams) will be drawn into seeded positions for the round of 24 and each team will receive a bye.
The teams finishing 2nd in each group will be drawn into the opposite half of the respective group winners, and face a 3rd placed team in the round of 16 – with the restriction that teams having played against each other in the group stage, will not meet again in the first round of the knock-out competition.
The winning team will receive gold medals, the runner-up silver medals, and the two losing semi-finalists, bronze medals.
Seeding
Seeding was based on the World Team Ranking published for January 2024. (The World Team Ranking for each national association is based on the three highest ranked players in that association named on the current Men’s and Women’s World Rankings).
