The International Cricket Council (ICC) is keeping a watchful eye on the recent unrest in Bangladesh, with concerns mounting over the potential impact on the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from October 3rd to 20th, but ongoing student protests and violence have cast a shadow of doubt over its smooth execution.
ICC Monitoring Situation, No Decision Yet
While the event is still a few months away, the ICC is taking a proactive approach. “We are closely monitoring the situation, but the event is still some time away. The situation appears to have improved over the last 24 hours,” revealed an ICC source currently attending the annual conference in Colombo.
This cautious optimism stems from reports suggesting a potential de-escalation of tensions in Bangladesh. However, the ICC has not yet made any official pronouncements regarding a potential change in venue or postponement of the tournament.
Concerns Stem from Ongoing Protests and Violence
The source of concern lies in the recent wave of protests and violence that erupted in response to a court order on government job quotas. Over 150 people have reportedly been killed in the unrest, leading to internet shutdowns in various parts of the country and prompting many foreign students to leave Bangladesh.
The ICC’s apprehension is understandable. Hosting a major international cricket tournament like the Women’s T20 World Cup requires a stable environment, with concerns surrounding security and infrastructure potentially jeopardizing the event.
The issue was reportedly not on the agenda for the recent influential ICC Board meeting in Colombo. Additionally, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials haven’t publicly addressed the concerns raised by the ICC.

World Cup Preparations Underway Despite Uncertainty
It’s important to note that preparations for the World Cup were well underway before the current unrest. The ICC unveiled the official schedule in Dhaka back in May, with the captains of both the Indian and Bangladeshi women’s teams present at the event.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh even met the captains and expressed her best wishes for the tournament’s success. Australia, the defending champions, were also poised to participate.
