In a display of accuracy and finesse, Scotland’s Charlie Cassell created the record for the best ODI debut with figures of 7 wickets for just 21 runs against Oman. Cassell did better than South African Kagiso Rabada’s previous best debut figures of 6/16 nearly nine years ago in 2015; his performance happened at Dundee and managed to do something more.

Cassell made an instant impression as his first ball was leg before Oman’s skipper Zeeshan Maqsood. On the very next ball, he clean-bowled Ayaan Khan to become the first-ever bowler to pick up two wickets from the first two balls of an ODI debut. But Cassell did not stop there as, two deliveries later, he had Khalid Kail dismissed, thus claiming an incredible three wickets off his very first over.
Cassell never lacked accuracy and precision throughout his spell. He followed this up with a five-wicket haul, dismissing Mehran Khan to join the elite list of 15 players who have achieved the feat on an ODI debut. At the end of his spell, Cassell had figures of 7 for 21, the best bowling figures by an ODI debutant and the seventh-best in the history of men’s ODIs.
Cassell’s debut outshone performances by other noted debutants, with Fidel Edwards returning 6/22 and Tony Dodemaide 5/21. Moreover, his performance stands out in a ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in which Scotland bowled out Oman for 91 runs. Pratik Athavale topped with 34 runs for Oman; only two other batsmen reached double figures.
