Seven-time Grand Slam champion splits with coach after 14 years

Hsieh Su-wei and Paul McNamee have confirmed their split after nine Grand Slams and 14 years together.

Hsieh has been partnered with Jelena Ostapenko in recent years, which culminated in the pair playing at the WTA Finals at the end of the season.

The pair reached the doubles finals of Wimbledon and Roland Garros this season, which helped the pair reach the top 10 of the rankings.

The team are set to play together into 2026, but Hsieh will no longer be working with her long-time coach.

McNamee took to social media to confirm that he was no longer working with the 39-year-old Taiwan tennis star.

“After 14 years, where I was present for Su wei Hsieh winning nine Grand Slams, which were all such a thrill, we’ve moved on,” the Australian wrote on Instagram.

McNamee also confirmed who he has begun working with after his split from the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

“I’m now working with talented Aussie Ellen Perez, partnering Demi Schuurs. I’ve been blessed and, as an Aussie myself, it’s heartwarming to now be helping another one.”

It’s no surprise that McNamee wants to work with young Australian tennis talent, having worked as the CEO of the Australian Open previously.

The iconic coach also helped develop American Jennifer Capriati at high-profile tournaments, including Wimbledon in 1993.

Hsieh Su-wei’s career under the tutelage of Paul McNamee

The star’s exceptional doubles career has seen her achieve Grand Slam success with a multitude of different partners.

McNamee oversaw Hsieh’s incredible work with doubles partner Peng Shuai, which brought two Grand Slams in two years at Wimbledon in 2013 and Roland Garros in 2014.

The star has also won Grand Slams with Barbora Strýcová and Elise Mertens, all of which were under the guidance of McNamee.

Her sole Australian Open crown came alongside Mertens, which, coincidentally, came against future doubles partner Jelena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok.

The only Grand Slam doubles title that Hsieh is yet to win is the US Open. The star reached the semi-final in 2012 alongside Anabel Medina Garrigues and again in 2023 with Wang Xinyu.
