Virat Kohli is just 25 runs away from completing 28,000 international runs, another landmark in his long and decorated career. He currently has 27,975 runs from 623 innings across Tests, ODIs and T20Is.
If Kohli reaches the mark, he will become only the third batter in cricket history to score 28,000 international runs. The other two are Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara, names that define greatness across generations.
Tendulkar reached 28,000 runs in 644 innings and went on to finish with a staggering 34,357 runs from 782 innings in international cricket. His record remains the highest aggregate across formats.
Sangakkara crossed the 28,000-run mark in his final international match in 2015. He ended his career with 28,016 runs from 666 innings, closing the chapter as one of Sri Lanka’s finest batters.
Kohli is set to achieve the milestone faster than both. He is likely to get the chance in the first ODI against New Zealand on January 11, where India begin another white-ball assignment at home.
In ODIs, Kohli’s numbers continue to stand out. He has scored 14,557 runs in 308 matches, including 53 hundreds and 76 fifties. His ability to pace chases and control games has defined India’s ODI success over the past decade.
His Test career ended earlier this year, but the numbers still speak loudly. Kohli scored 9,230 runs in 123 Tests with 30 centuries after making his debut in 2011. He retired from the format before the England tour in May 2025.
Kohli also signed off from T20 internationals after India’s triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma. He finished with 4,188 runs in 125 matches, including one hundred and 38 fifties.
