NHL Rumors: Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, and the Winnipeg Jets

The New York Rangers are trying to trade for Kiefer Sherwood

Vincent Z. Mercogliano of The Athletic: The New York Rangers are taking a run at acquiring Vancouver Canucks pending UFA winger Kiefer Sherwood, according to a source. The Canucks are believed to be looking for a first-round pick, possibly more.

Sherwood carries a $1.5 million cap hit and has scored 17 goals so far this season. Rangers GM Chris Drury has been looking for a top-nine forward who can score. The Rangers’ offense sits towards the bottom of the league.

Despite placing defenseman Adam Fox on the LTIR and goaltender Igor Shesterkin on the IR this week, the Rangers aren’t giving up.

Two sources have said that despite the Rangers being close to a wild-card spot, there are six teams ahead of them, and some selling could occur. They need to get younger and faster.

Contract extension talks with pending UFA forward Artemi Panarin didn’t get far, and he could be moved by the trade deadline if they start to sell off some assets. They’d have to ask him if he’d be willing to waive his no-movement clause.

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Luke Schenn may welcome a trade

The Fourth Period: The Winnipeg Jets would like to acquire a goal scorer for their second line. They are also looking at moving out some of their pending UFAs, including defenseman Luke Schenn, who wouldn’t mind going to a contender. David Pagnotta on DFO Rundown on Schenn.

“The interesting thing is that we’re starting to hear about Luke Schenn, who just played his 1,100th game with the Jets last night,” Pagnotta said. “I don’t know if that’ll be his last with the Jets, but I don’t know how much more runway there is if things continue status quo.

“There is some word that Luke Schenn wouldn’t mind a change of scenery. He would be open to a move. I don’t know if that relates to how the team is performing, and he’s been scratched a few times. I’m sure it all correlates. But the latest that we’ve got on Luke Schenn is he hasn’t asked for a trade, but he is open to a change of scenery. And that’s something that the Jets are monitoring now.”

The 36-year-old Schenn is in the last year of his deal at a $2.75 million cap hit.
